Riesling Wine Tasting Notes
1998 Chateau St. Jean Sonoma County Johannisberg Riesling Score: 89.0 "Antithetical to German Riesling, this is nonetheless an aromatic, complex wine. Unlike the lighter, more delicate German Rieslings, this California version is full-bodied with a pleasant bitterness that balances the sweetness of the red apple and orange peel fruit."
Hogue Columbia Valley Washington Johannisberg Riesling Score: 87.0 "Crisp and spritzy apple, off dry, intense, sinfully quaffable-one sip leads to another. Very close to a Rheingau kabinett and a bargain at the price. Great as an aperitif, it would also be excellent with Mexican cuisine or fish."
1998 Graff Piesporter Michelsberg [Germany] Riesling Score: 83.0 "Subdued steely nose, dry on the palate, light and hinting at fruit, not delivering until the finish. Pair with dover sole sauteed in lemon butter sauce, or talapia."
1997 Wormser Liebfrauenstift Kirchenstuck Rheinhessen [Germany] Riesling Score: 87.0 "just moderately sweet, this wine has a floral nose and honey flavors, crisp acidity and tart finish."
1998 Baron von Heyl Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim Nierstein [Germany] [riesling?] Score: 85.0 "Virtually dry, subtle forest floor aromas, tart and citrusy on the palate. Good length. Good value. Pair with fish. "
1998 Weingut Johannishof Johannisberger Vogelsang [Germany] Riesling Kabinett Score: 89.0 "Quite a fine wine for $13. Clear mineral and apple character with subtle shades of honey and apricot; crisp acidity, long clean, minerally finish. Great with fish or bratwurst."
1998 Graff Wehlener Sonnenurh [Germany] Riesling Spatlese Score: 87.0 "Restrained and almost too subtle, yet finely structured, lightly sweet and tangy. Its like a liquid pippin apple. Sculptured, proportioned, easy to drink, both as an aperitif and with stir-fried vegetables and chicken, sweet-and-sour pork and other Asian dishes."
1998 Schloss Vollrads Rheingau [Germany] Riesling Kabinett Score: 89.0 "Incredibly floral, multi-faceted fruit (lychee, strawberry, apricot). Sweet, but balanced by good acidity and a pleasant bitterness, and revealing more and more through an incredibly long, luxurious finish. Amazing for the price. Pair with pound cake."
