This is an old family "recipe" that I improvised and came up with ingredient amounts for a family cookbook. You may wish to adjust the amount of vinegar or sugar to your taste.
Ingredients
- 4 slices bacon
- 6 cups shredded cabbage
- 3 tablespoons vinegar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Dash black pepper
Directions
Cook bacon in a large skillet until crisp; remove bacon, reserving drippings. Set bacon aside. Add cabbage to skillet. Cook over medium heat stirring often until cabbage starts to brown a little. Add remaining ingredients. Cover, lower heat, and cook just until cabbage is tender-crisp. Adjust seasoning; adding more salt and pepper if needed. To serve, spoon the cabbage into a serving dish and crumble the bacon over the top.
