Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. powdered ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • Granulated sugar for rolling

Directions

Sift dry ingredients to combine. In a large bowl, beat shortening and sugar until blended, stir in molasses and egg. Add the flour mixture in two parts, blending well. Shape the dough into a ball, cover and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Divide and shape the dough into 1-1/2inch balls, roll thoroughly in sugar, place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 15 minutes.


Yields 50-60 two inch cookies.
