Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 Tlb. yeast
  • 2 Tlb. warm water
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 stick margarine, melted

Directions

Sift dry ingredients together. In large bowl cut in shortening until it looks like cornmeal. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let stand for 5 minutes. Add yeast mixture to buttermilk. Add buttermilk-yeast mixture to flour mixture; mix well. Turn out on floured board. Pat or roll dough to 1 inch. Cut with biscuit cutter. Dip each biscuit in margarine and place in greased baking pan. Bake in preheated oven 450 degrees for about 12 minutes or until golden brown.
