This is a recipe for anise flavored licorice, but it could be changed to chocolate licorice by using brown paste food color instead of black and using chocolate flavoring (Schillings brand flavoring has a liquid chocolate flavor.)


  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Karo syrup
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 can Eagle brand milk
  • black paste food color
  • anise flavoring


Boil first four ingredients to 232 degrees. Take off stove. Add paste black color and 2 teaspoons anise flavoring. Pour into buttered 9 X 12 pan. Cut in squares and wrap in wax paper or Saran wrap. Makes lots!
