Ingredients

  • Makes 2 loaves
  • Figs are symbolic of the sweetness of life, and the fig tree is a symbol of prosperity and longevity. Here, figs are featured in a traditional Hanukkah bread.
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbs. oil
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 11/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1 cup finely chopped dried figs
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 300:F. Grease and flour two loaf pans.

In a large bowl, mix eggs, honey, sugar, and oil. Stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda, and spices. Fold in figs and nuts. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake 1 hour or until firm to the touch in the center. Unmold and cool on racks. Cool thoroughly before cutting into slices.
