Ingredients

  • 1/2 C sugar
  • +
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 3/4 C margarine
  • 1 C cold water
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 C flour
  • Frosting:
  • 2 C sugar
  • 1/2 C butter
  • 1/2 C milk
  • 1 tsp corn syrup

Directions

For cake:

Place the 1/2 C sugar in a frying pan and dissolve over medium heat until it starts to smoke. Add 1/2 C hot water and stir until smooth.

Cream the shortening and sugar, add yolks well beaten, then the burnt sugar and cold water. Sift flour 7 times with salt and soda. Add 1/2 flour, mix thoroughly, add vanilla and the rest of the flour and beat well.

Use (3) 9" layer pans or a large loaf pan and bake at 350F for 35 minutes.

Frosting:

Place 2 C of sugar in the same pan that you burnt the sugar in, add remaining ingredients and cook slowly for 3 minutes, then cool the frosting until it's spreading consistency.
