Ingredients:
1/2 C sugar+ 1 1/2 C sugar 3/4 C margarine 1 C cold water 2 eggs, separated 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp. soda 1/4 tsp salt 3 C flour Frosting: 2 C sugar 1/2 C butter 1/2 C milk 1 tsp corn syrup
Directions:
For cake:Place the 1/2 C sugar in a frying pan and dissolve over medium heat until it starts to smoke. Add 1/2 C hot water and stir until smooth. Cream the shortening and sugar, add yolks well beaten, then the burnt sugar and cold water. Sift flour 7 times with salt and soda. Add 1/2 flour, mix thoroughly, add vanilla and the rest of the flour and beat well. Use (3) 9" layer pans or a large loaf pan and bake at 350F for 35 minutes. Frosting: Place 2 C of sugar in the same pan that you burnt the sugar in, add remaining ingredients and cook slowly for 3 minutes, then cool the frosting until it's spreading consistency. |
