French Wine Tasting Notes

1998 Delas Freres
Les Reinages Gigondas [france] [red rhone]
Score: 81.0
"The nose is characterized by black plum and black pepper, while the astringent palate adds some licorice notes with some unpleasant bitterness in the finish. "
1997 Delas Freres Cuvee Francois de Tournon
Saint-Joseph [france] [red rhone]
Score: 95.0
"A dry, medium-bodied Syrah with peppery strawberry-plum fruit, a touch of leather, moderate tannin and a tart, drying finish. A bit more austere on the palate than the nose would lead you to expect."
1998 Delas Freres
Les Launes Crozes Hermitage Blanc [france] [white rhone]
Score: 90.0
"A blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, this is a fine example of Rhone white varieties: The nose is a complex melange of hawthorn blossom, sandalwood, muted mango and lemon. Dry, silky and long, its a perfect Chardonnay substitute and would pair well with the same foods, particularly fish."
1998 Domaines Schlumberger Fleur
Vin DAlsace [france] Gewurztraminer
Score: 88.0
"A rich, full-bodied, intense demi-sec Gewurztraminer with excellent varietal definition. A nose of litchee and cinnamon leads to a palate with sweet litchee and grapefruit notes. The finish is long and pleasant. Serve chilled with Roquefort cheese or spicy dishes such as curry. "

1998 Vichon Mediterranean
Vin de Pays DOc [france] Sauvignon Blanc
Score: 70.0
"Thin, tart, citrusy, sour."
1997 Vichon Mediterranean
[france] Chardonnay
Score: 83.0
"tart citrus fruit, clean citrus aroma, a tart warm limey finish. Good fish wine."
1997 Vichon Mediterranean
[france] Merlot
Score: 82.0
"Silky on the mid-palate, chalky in the finish, with a muted nose and simple berry flavors. Tart, easy to drink picnic wine."
1997 Vichon Mediterranean
[france] Cabernet Sauvignon
Score: 84.0
"Like the '97 Merlot, the Cab is think and silky on the mid-palate, but the Cab is the more interesting wine, having black currant character and better length. Worth $8.00."
1998 Rivefort de France
Vin de Pays dOc [France] Chardonnay
Score: 85.0
"You could have fooled me-this is a good wine, but its fig and mineral overtones suggested Semillon instead of Chardonnay. None-the-less, this is a crisp, well-balanced wine with some character and length for just $6. A good value and a good wine to serve with baked white fish."
1998 Rivefort de France
Vin de Pays dOc [France] Sauvignon Blanc
Score: 83.0
"In an odd turn of events, Riveforts latest Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc releases seem reversed. That is, the Sauvignon Blanc is more characteristically Chardonnay and vice versa. This Sauvignon Blanc has rather neutral fruit with the mouthfeel and weight of Chardonnay and a distinct flinty, minerally flavor. A wine for shellfish if there ever was one."
1996 Chateau de Pez
St-Estephe (backwards accent over fist e) [France] [Bordeaux]
Score: 88.0
"A very good Bordeaux on a par with a lot of classed growths. Elegant cassis, cherry and subtle oak notes in perfect balance. The tannin is unobtrusive and the finish is long and fruity. Excellent value for Bordeaux."
