Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Tasting Notes
1996 St. Supery Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 83.0 "Minty, dry red currant, medium-high tannin, drying finish."
1996 Groth Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 89.0 "One sniff and you know this is 'serious' wine. Deep, concentrated blackberries, olives and some earthy notes, soft integrated tannin, and a dark fruit and olive finish. Fairly intense, it remains at the same level from nose through finish. It would pair well with red meats now, but Id prefer to hold it for three years or more before reevalutaion."
Bonterra Organically Grown North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 91.0 "Falls in the middle between the fat, rich California-sty le, and the lighter, leaner Bordeaux-style. Refusing to be emphatic, Bonterra always strikes a more subtle chord, yet this wine is undeniably complex and well-balanced, with bright cherry fruit, graham cracker and cinnamon, and a resplendant finish. Damned impressive. "
1994 The Bergkelder estate La Motte [South Africa] "A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc," Score: 92.0 " this is a marvelous wine, complex, supple, packed with black currant and blackberry flavors, as well as nuances of toast and spice from the French oak. Perfect balance, smooth texture and firm structure. Great now, Id love to put aside a case and see how it will age over the next decade. A first rate bargain at $15."
Errazuriz Aconcagua Vineyard El Ceibo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 89.0 "A thoroughly sensual wine, wild and mysterious, velvety smooth with a spicy kick in the finish-ripe blackberry, cassis, heavy smoke, moderate tannin, and a long finish."
1988 Simi California Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 90.0 "If rose ever comes back into favor, this one will be up on the top. Big strawberry-raspberry flavor, wonderfully aromatic, its just off-dry and if chilled the impression is decidedly dry. In either case, it has excellent balance, so enjoy."
1996 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered Score: 89.0 "Rich cassis, mesquite smoke with a touch of wet straw and leather, persistent and aromatic. Full-body, moderate tannin, and a long, deep, fruity-leathery finish. Mondavis Executive Chef, Annie roberts, suggests pairing this with an herb-crusted rack of lamb."
1996 Robert Mondavi Oakville Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered Score: 91.0 "Aromatic and round, displaying concentrated blackberry, nutmeg, vanilla, smoke and dark chocolate. Firm though well-integrated tannins. Good length. If youre fool enough to drink this now, pair it with beef. However, if youre looking for subtlty, give it a chance to age another 7 to 10 years in the bottle."
1996 Robert Mondavi Stags Leap District Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered Score: 92.0 "Compared with the Oakville, the Stags Leap shows far more fruit (leaning toward black currant), with nuances of roasted meat and cloves, as well as good depth of flavor and excellent length. The tannin is balanced, but calls out for another 3 to 7 years in the bottle for maximum enjoyment. "
1996 Robert Craig Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 81.0 "Big, tarry, carbon-like flavors, like something burned on the grill. Well-integrated tannin, needing about 5 to 7 years to come around, its nonetheless over-the-top and would have been better if less extracted."
1997 Napa Ridge [Beringer] Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 87.0 "Very elegant, moderate tannin, firm structure and huge raspberry-loganberry fruit with a touch of orange peel and subtle oak spice."
1997 Mirassou Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Score: 91.0 "A lovely blackberry reduction with some vanilla. Aromatic, well-balanced, with soft tannin and a lush, fruity finish. Maintains a high level of intensity from the nose through the fnish. "
