You may substitute any other lentil -green or black mung beans will work fine too,

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow split peas
  • 1" piece ginger
  • 2 green chilis
  • 3-4 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 onion sliced fine
  • 1 tomato diced
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp. chopped cilantro

Directions

Boil the peas in 2-3 cups water till soft and mushy, approx. 45 minutes or alternately cook in a pressure cooker. Grind the next 3 ingredients to a paste with a little water. Heat the oil in a heavy pan. Saute the onions till translucent. Add the paste and fry for 5-6 minutes. Add the tomatos and cook till well blended. Add the spices and fry for another minute. Add the cooked peas ( dhal) and salt and cook till thick enough to scoop up as a dip. Garnish with cilantro.
