This recipe is not as refined as the first reply given but it is the simple recipe made at home and in bars. The other would probably be found in more expensive cafes but as a university student in France I didn't tend to frequent such places.

Ingredients

  • 2 thin slices of white French-style bread
  • thin slice of ham
  • thin slice of cheese such as mozzarella or swiss
  • butter for frying

Directions

Quite simply, butter the outsides of the slices of bread, place the slices of ham and cheese in between and fry both sides of the sandwich in a skillet pressing the sandwich together. The secret is to have beautiful fresh bread and thin slices of all ingredients.
