Directions
For Italians, having a fig tree in their patio is like living at the end of the rainbow!
My Gremma loved Figs... she would take a break from her chores, sit under the vineyard shade, and open up her apron, where she had a handful of figs she pulled from the tree. She would then pull them apart with her wrinkled hands, and eat the ruby red seeds, oh so sweet.
I remember as a child, during Christmas time, she would set the figs out, to dry, and then slice the fig and press half a walnut into each of them, and dip them in red wine. This was a delicacy served only during the Holiday season.
She would also make filetti (fillets of fig packed with granules of amaretti cookies and chocolate), capocollo (a ?sausage? of fig, pistachios, almonds, and cinnamon) and fagottini (wrapped figs cooked in leaves).
Just reminescing about these delicacies my mouth is watering!!!
I've taken all these ingredients and canned them to preserve, not only a little bit of family tradition, but the sweetness of the figs, the rustic flavor of the walnuts, and the robust flavor of the Merlot wine.
Create a beautiful appetizer with baguette, and top each one with a fig, let the juices run through the bread... it is delicious!
You can also serve a platter with cream cheese, or with slices of slices of mozzarella cheese and prosciutto...
This decadent fig is not only beautiful, its also delicious!
