Note: Instead of figs and nuts, you may add 1 cup raisins for Bran Bread With Molasses.


  • 2 cups bran
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons any baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 3/4 cups sour milk
  • 1/2 cup molasses OR 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped figs, stewed or dried
  • 1/2 cup chopped nut meats


Combine the bran, flour, baking powder, salt and soda. Combine and beat the egg, milk, molasses. Beat in the dry ingredients. Add the figs and nuts.

Place the batter in two greased 8x4 loaf pans. Permit it to stand for 1 hour. Bake the bread in a moderate oven 375 degrees F. for 1 hour or more.
