Ingredients
- 1/2 C butter
- 1 1/2 C sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- (2) 1 oz. bottles red food coloring
- 2 T cocoa
- 2 1/2 C flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 C buttermilk
- 1 1/2 tsp soda
- 1 T vinegar
Directions
Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs. Stir in vanilla. Mix food coloring with cocoa and let set for a few minutes before adding to above mixture.
Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Mix soda and vinegar; fold into above mixture.
Pour into greased 9" layer pans and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
VELVET BUTTER FROSTING
1 C milk
6 T flour
1 C butter
1 1/2 C powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Mix milk and flour. Cook over low heat until very thick. Cool.
Cream together butter, powdered sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy.
Add the cooled cooked mixture to the creamed mixture and mix until well blended.
I change the color of the cake depending on the occasion. yes, I've used this recipe as the groom's cake many times.
