Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg slightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons margarine or butter
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Honey

Directions

Heat water and brown sugar in 1 quart sauce pan to boiling; boil uncovered 2 minutes. Cool;stir in egg. Cut margarine into flour, baking powder and salt until mixture resembles fine crumbs; stir in egg mixture. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead until elastic, 5 minutes. Shape dough into roll 20 inches long. Cover and let rest 1 hour.

Heat oil (1 inch) to 365 degrees. Cut dough into 1 inch slices. Roll each slice on lightly floured surface into 5 inch circle. Fry circles, turning once, until golden brown. About 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon or serve with honey.
