Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. ground beef, shaped into 12 patties
  • 6 large potatoes, cut up or sliced
  • 3 onions, diced or quartered
  • 6 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • Salt and pepper
  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil

Directions

Divide ingredients into 12 servings. On twelve 12x15-inch pieces of aluminum foil and beginning with ground beef, layer potatoes, onions and carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Fold and crimp edges to seal.

Using long tongs and oven mitts, place foil packets in hot embers. Cook 10-12 minutes. Turn when half of cooking time is past.

Cooking Tips:

A cabbage leaf on top and bottom of layered ingredients will keep dinner from burning but will not flavor the meal.

Put all packets in the embers with folds down; when packets are turned, you will be able to tell which ones have been turned.

Experiment with other variations, such as sweet potatoes, marshmallows, pineapple and ham or bacon, apples, cheese and hot dogs.

To seal packet securely, bring edges of foil together, fold down two or three turns, leaving room in packet for steam. Roll ends of packets toward center.
