Ingredients

  • 5-6 cups flour
  • 2 pkgs. active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening or butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins, rinsed

Directions

Put in saucepan, milk, suger, water and shortening. Heat until warm. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add yeast; set aside. In large bowl, put flour, salt and raisins. Add liquid to flour. Add eggs; mix well. Turn dough out on board. Knead about 8 minutes. Oil bowl. Place dough in bowl and oil top.Cover with towel. Let rise until double in bulk. Cut dough into 9 pieces. Cut each piece in 3 smaller pieces. Roll strands and braid. Put side by side in greased round pan. Brush with egg yolk mixed with water. Let rise until double in size and bake at 350 degrees until golden brown.
