Ingredients

  • 1 C Crisco
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 oz. red food coloring
  • 2 level Tbs. cocoa
  • 1 C buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vinegar
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 1/2 C cake flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

Cream Crisco, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa; add to creamed mixture. Add flour, slat, buttermilk and vanilla. Fold in, but do not beat vinegar and soda. Bake in two layer cake pans at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Let cool before frosting. (Can also bake in tube pan for 45 minutes.) Serves 12.

Butter Cream Frosting

Mix together 2 Tbs. cornstarch and 1 C water. Cook until thick and let cool. Cream until fluffy 1 C granulated sugar, 1 C butter or margarine and 1 tsp. vanilla. Blend into cold cornstarch mixture until like cream.
