Ingredients

  • Mix:
  • 1/2 ox. red food coloring
  • 3 T. instant cocoa
  • 3 T. + 1 tsp. water (1/2 oz)
  • Set aside...
  • Cream:
  • 1/2 C. Crisco
  • 1-1/2 C. granulated sugar
  • Add:
  • 2 eggs
  • colored mixture
  • Beat well!!! Make sure it's all blended smoothly.
  • Add:
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2-1/2 C. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • scant tsp. salt

Directions

Beat very well till smooth. Bake in greased and floured layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Test after 25 minutes with toothpick. Let stand for a few minutes before turning out. "THE" Frosting (not too sweet, but very good)

Cream:

1/4# oleo, softened
1/2 C. Crisco
1 C. granulated sugar
Beat till very fluffy!

Then add:

3 T. flour - 1 at a time
2/3 C. milk - room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat hard and long at high speed until very smooth and creamy and the gritty texture is gone. Trust me! You'll never make another frosting again. My sons are 37 and 40 and still request this cake and frosting. My grandkids are following suit. It is NOT low-fat or low-cal, but enjoying a very small piece now and then won't hurt.
