Ingredients

  • 1 10-ounce loaf French or Italian bread
  • 8 eggs
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 6 teaspoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon double-strength vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, slivered

Directions

Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Slice bread 1-inch thick and place in single layer in bottom of pan.

In a large bowl, beat eggs, milk, sugar, salt, vanilla and cinnamon. Gently pour over bread in pan. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, uncover and let stand at room temperature while oven preheats to 350. Dot with butter and bake until casserole is puffy and light brown, about 40 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Makes 8 servings
