Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 3 tablespoons orange marmalade or other favorite preserves
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 loaf Italian or French bread (not a baguette)
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- pinch of nutmeg
- pinch of salt
Directions
In mixer bowl, combine softened cream cheese, preserves, vanilla and nuts. Cut bread into 1 1/2 to 2-inch thick slices. Cut a horizontal slit in the side of each slice. Spoon 1 or 2 tablespoons filling into each pocket. ( This could be done with a pastry bag with large tip.) Mix eggs, milk, nutmeg, and salt. Carefully dip each side of stuff bread slices into milk mixture until bread is just moistened. Cook on lightly greased griddle until well browned on each side. (Or bake in a long, flat, buttered pan at 400 degrees, about 10 minutes on each side, or until browned.)
8 to 10 servings.
