This frosting takes color well and keeps well in a sealed container in the refrigerator.


  • 3 Tbs. flour
  • 1 c. milk (cool)
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla


Whisk the flour into the milk until incorporated. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook until mixture thickens, stirring or whisking all the time(no lumps)
Beat shortening, butter or margarine,sugar and vanilla, until smooth and creamy. Add milk and flour mixture gradually,and beat well until smooth and creamy.
