Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 c warm water (110 - 115 degrees)
  • 1 c warm chicken broth
  • 2 tbsps molasses
  • 1 c flour
  • 1 1/2 c whole wheat flour
  • 1 c cracked wheat
  • 1/2 c cornmeal
  • 1/2 c dry milk powder
  • 2 tsps garlic powder
  • 2 tsps salt
  • 3/4 c flour (up to 1 cup)
  • 1 egg -- beaten
  • 1 tbsp milk

Directions

Dissolve yeast in warm water in mixing bowl. Stir in broth and molasses. Add 1 cup flour, whole wheat flour, cracked wheat, cornmeal, dry milk powder, garlic powder and salt; mix well.

Knead in remaining 3/4 to 1 cup flour on floured board until smooth and elastic. Divide into 2 portions. Roll each portion to 3/8" thickness on floured surface. Cut into desired shapes.

Place on ungreased baking sheet. Brush with mixture of egg and milk. Bake at 300 degrees for 45 minutes. Turn off oven. Let stand in closed oven overnight.

You may also add 1/4 cup liver powder, available from health food stores.

Yield: 3 1/2 - 4 dozen.
