Date Nut Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 1/2 cups cut-up dates
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar(packed)
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour*
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts
  • *If using self-rising flour, decrease soda to 1/4 tsp. and omit salt

Directions:
Pour boiling water over the dates and cool. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches. Mix thoroughly brown sugar, shortening and egg. Stir in the date mixture. Mix in flour, soda and salt, then stir in the nuts. Spread in the pan. Bake 60-70 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
