Ingredients:

  • 1/4 lb. sweet chocolat
  • 2 C. sugar
  • 1/2 C. walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 C pecans, chopped
  • 1 C. shortening
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 C. boiling water
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2-1/2 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 4 egg whites, beaten stiffly

Directions:
In a bowl, cream together sugar & shortening. Add egg yolks, one at a time, blending well. Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water. Blend into mixture. In a bowl, add buttermilk, flour, salt, & soda. Blend together thoroughly. Add vanilla. Fold in egg whites. Fold in nuts. Pour into three 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees until fork done.

Icing:

1 C. sugar
1 stick butter
1 C. evaporated milk
3 egg yolks beaten
1 C. shreded coconut
1 C. pecans, chopped
1 tsp. vanilla

In a double boiler, while stirring constantly, add milk, sugar, butter and egg yolks. Cook until mixture thickens. Blend in coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Spread generously over cake.
