Ingredients

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 8 oz candied mixed fruits (fruitcake mix)
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 env. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp grated lemon rind
  • 1/4 tsp ground mace
  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • granulated sugar

Directions

Combine raisins, fruit and orange juice in bowl and stir to combine.

Heat 1/2 cup margarine, milk, 1/2 cup sugar and salt until margarine melts. Remove to rack and cool slightly.

Sprinkle yeast and 1 tsp sugar over warm water, stirring until yeast is dissolved. Allow mixture to stand until it foams up and bubbles, about 10 minutes.

In mixer bowl, combine yeast mixture, 2 cups of flour, eggs, lemon rind, mace and begin beating with dough hook, adding heated milk mixture slowly. Beat 2 minutes, until batter is smooth.
Stir in almonds and reserved fruit mixture, then stir in remaining flour until mixture leaves side of bowl.

Turn dough out onto floured board and knead 5 minutes, until smooth and shiny, then put dough into greased bowl, turning to coat, and cover with plastic wrap. Allow to rise 2 hours, or until doubled.

Punch dough down and roll out, 1/2 at a time, to 15 by 9" oval. Fold each oval in half and place on greased cookie sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise until doubled.

Bake at 350 for 30 min., until loaves sound hollow when tapped with the handle of a knife. Remove from oven to rack and brush with melted margarine. Sprinkle immediately with enough granulated sugar to form a crust.

These can be frozen.
