You may change food colorings depending on the season. I've used green for Christmas or St. Pat's Day.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C butter
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • (2) 1 oz. bottled red food coloring
  • 2 T cocoa
  • 2 1/2 C flour
  • 1 tsp saltmilk
  • 1 1/2 tsp soda
  • 1 T vinegar
  • Velvet Butter Frosting:
  • 1 C milk
  • 6 T flour
  • 1 C butter
  • 1 1/2 C powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions

Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs, stir in vanilla. Mix food coloring with cocoa and let set for a few minutes before adding to above mixture. Sift together flour and salt. Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Mix soda and vinegar; fold into above mixture. Pour into greased 9" round pans and bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes

Frosting:
Mix milk and flour. Cook over low heat until very thick. Cool, cream together butter, powdered sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add the cooled cooked mixture to the creamed mixture and mix until just blended.
