Ingredients

  • 4 or 5 medium potatoes,sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1/4 tsp.ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground oregano
  • 1/4 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 can-16 oz. tomatoes,drained,chopped,no salt
  • added (or 15-oz. can tomato sauce)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese

Directions

Bake potatoes(after tossing in oil and 1/4 tsp. salt) in 400 degrees oven in single layer on jelly roll pan, for 8 minutes,turn over, bake 5 more minutes.Remove. Lower temperature to 375 degrees. Saute onion in remaining oil, add garlic, saute 1 minute. Stir in meat.Cook 4 to 6 minutes. Stir in cinnamon, oregano, thyme, 1/4 tsp. salt, pepper. Add Tomatoes. Bring to boil. Lower heat. Cook 10 minutes. Gradually whisk milk into flour in saucepan. cook over medium heat until slightly thickened. Stir in 1/4 tsp. salt and nutmeg. Whisk egg in small bowl. Slowly whisk in 1/2 cup milk mixture. Whisk egg mixture into milk mixture. Stir in all but 1/8 cup parmesan. Lightly grease casserole dish. Layer potatoes, meat mixture, then potatoes. Pour milk mixture over all, then sprinkle with remaining Parmesan.Place on baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees about 40 minutes til golden and puffy.
