Ingredients:

  • 1 package (1 tablespoon) dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup water
  • vegetable oil for deep frying
  • sugar and dash of nutmeg

Directions:
Mix yeast with 1 teaspoon sugar and add to warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes. Sift dry ingredients together. Stir in melted butter. Beat eggs, milk and water together and add to flour mixture. Add yeast and mix well. Dough will be sticky. Cover and let dough rise until doubled, then punch down. Let dough rise a second time. Heat oil in a deep frying to 375 degrees. Dip fingertips in a bowl of oil or softened butter, then pinch off golf ball size pieces of dough. Drop in heated oil and cook until golden brown on one side. Turn over and fry until golden on the other side. Drain on paper towels and roll in sugar-nutmeg mixture. Serve immediately. Note: this recipe doubles well.
