This is my husband's favorite cake.Hope you like it too!

Ingredients

  • 1- (4oz) pkg.Germans Sweet Chocolate, 1/2 c. boiling water, 1 Tsp. vanilla, pinch salt, 2 C.sugar, 1/2 c. shortening, 4 egg yolks,(beaten) 1C.buttermilk, 2 1/2 c.cake flour,1 tsp. soda, 4 egg whites (beaten)
  • Frosting
  • 2 egg yolks, 1 Tbs.flour, 1 C. sugar, 1/4 t. salt, 1 large can cream (1 1/2 -2c) 1 stick butter, 1/4 c. chopped pecans, 1 C. coconut, 1 Tsp. vanilla.

Directions

For Cake: Melt chocolate in boiling water. Add vanilla and salt after chocolate is melted. Cream sugar and shortening, add beaten egg yolks. Add 3/4 of the cup of buttermilk, alternately with flourwhich has to be sifted in. Dissolve soda in remaining 1/2 c. buttermilk and add to creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate. Fold in beaten egg whites. bake in three 9 inch pans at 350 degrees for 25 or 30 minutes. Cool
For Frosting:
Beat egg yolks and set aside. Mix flour,sugar and salt. Stir into cream, add butter and cook over low heat until butter is melted. Pour small amount over egg yolks, beat, then add yolks to milk mixture, add pecans and coconut. Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add vanilla, mix well and spread on cooled cake.
