This was called Onion Pull-Aparts, and its as close as I could find to the "loaf"

Ingredients

  • 2 or 3 large sweet Spanish onions
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • l l/2 cups ice water
  • l extra large egg yolk
  • l l/2 cups all purpose flour
  • l l/2 tblsp cornstarch

Directions

Cut onions crosswise into thin slices; separate slices into rings. Cut larger rings crosswise into halves. Heat oil in deep fat fryer to 375F
Beat ice water and egg yolk in large bowl. Add flour and cornstarch all at once; stir briefly with fork just to combine. Batter will be lumpy, do not over mix.

Add onions rings to batter; stir to coat well. Remove rings, letting excess batter drain off; stack rings in basket of deep fat fryer, shape into loaf or any other shape you like. Fry in oil till crisp and golden. Remove from basket and drain on paper toweling.

Serve with forks to pull rings apart.
