Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons applesauce
  • 20 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons Elmer's glue
  • Additional cinnamon for rolling

Directions

Stir together ingredients, then work with your hands until it has a smooth, claylike consistency.

Sprinkle ground cinnamon generously over a pastry cloth on a wooden surface. Also coat your rolling pin with cinnamon. Roll dough out about 1/8 inch thick. Cut with various cookie cutters. Gather up dough and reroll scraps. Use a small skewer to mark details on ornaments and to poke a hole in the top for a ribbon. Using a spatula, lift ornaments to a cookie sheet. Heat oven to 120 degrees. Put ornaments in oven for 1 1/2 hours, then turn off oven and leave in oven for 5 to 6 hours or overnight. You can make a gingerbread man garland by poking holes in the hands instead of top and threading together with ribbon. Also, I like to use an inexpensive wooden embroidery hoop, glue the ornaments around it to make a wreath, then add a bow. For this idea, don't poke any holes in the ornaments.
