Ingredients:
1 pkg. dry yeast, dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water1/2 cup boiling water 2 tablespoon shortening 1/4 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 cup cold milk 1 egg 1 teaspoon nutmeg 3 3/4 cups flour
Directions:
Combine boiling water, shortening, sugar, and salt. Add cold milk. Blend in egg, nutmeg and the dissolved yeast. Blend in flour; mix to a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface; knead 7 - 10 minutes. (I haven't tried making these in a mixer with dough hooks, but it would probably work.) Place in a greased bowl; turn to coat top. Cover and refrigerate 2 - 3 hours or overnight. When ready to continue, roll out on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter. (Combine scraps and roll out again.) Let set on a floured surface until double in bulk, about 40 minutes. Fry in deep fat (375 degrees)about 2 minutes per side, until golden brown. If desired, shake in a bag with sugar or cinnamon and sugar. This is a very old recipe in the family for many years. These are light and wonderful!
