Red Velvet Cake Recipe

  American Cakes

Ingredients:
l cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 oz red food coloring (4 tbsp)
l/2 teasp salt
l tsp vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
2 l/2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 tbsp vinegar
2 tbsp cocoa

Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs. Make paste of cocoa and food coloring, add to creamed mixture.
Mix salt, vanilla with buttermilk alternatively with flour and add to above mixture.
Mix soda and vinegar last, stirring in (not beat)
Bake in two 9" layer pans for 30 mins at 350.

For icing: Cook 5 tblsp flour, l cup milk till thick, stirring constantly. Let cool.
Cream l cup each sugar, butter and 1 teasp vanilla. Add to milk mixture and beat till the right consistency to spread.
